The Priests Plot Against Lazarus
The scribes and Pharisees took counsel with the high priest to slay Lazarus; for many renounced their traditions and believed in the word of Jesus, because the miracle of Lazarus was a great one, seeing that Lazarus had conversation with men, and ate and drank. But because he was powerful, having a following in Jerusalem, and possessing with his sister Magdala and Bethany, they knew not what to do.
Jesus entered into Bethany, into the house of Lazarus, and Martha, with Mary, ministered unto him.
Mary, sitting one day at the feet of Jesus, was listening to his words, whereupon Martha said to Jesus: 'Lord, seest thou not that my sister taketh no care for thee, and provideth not that which thou must eat and thy disciples?'
Jesus answered: 'Martha, Martha, do thou take thought for that which thou shouldst do; for Mary hath chosen a part which shall not be taken away from her for ever.'
The scribes and Pharisees consulted with the high priest about killing Lazarus, for many people had abandoned their traditions and believed Jesus's word because the raising of Lazarus was such a great miracle. Lazarus was alive, associated openly with others, and ate and drank. But because he was influential, had many supporters in Jerusalem, and owned property in Magdala and Bethany with his sister, they did not know what to do.
Jesus entered Bethany and went to Lazarus's house, where Martha and Mary served him.
One day Mary sat at Jesus's feet listening to his words. Martha said to Jesus: 'Lord, do you not see that my sister takes no care of you and leaves me to provide everything that you and your disciples must eat?'
Jesus answered: 'Martha, Martha, you are anxious about what must be done, but Mary has chosen a part that will never be taken from her.'
